More than just a ride
The University of Sydney has one of the strongest alumni networks in the country. The people you meet during your degree shape the decade that follows. Most of those connections happen by chance — but the commute is a surprisingly good place to make them deliberately.

The University of Sydney's Camperdown campus is one of the most beautiful in Australia — and one of the most inaccessible by car. Street parking in the surrounding suburbs has become increasingly restricted, on-campus parking is limited, and the journey from outer suburbs involves multiple transfers.
For students coming from the Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West, or nearby suburbs, the commute is manageable by bus or light rail. But for students coming from the Northern Beaches, the outer south, or Western Sydney, the trip involves significant time and multiple connections — each one an opportunity for a delay.
Carpooling via Herdy offers a direct alternative. As a passenger, you get a door-to-campus ride without transfers. The Vaucluse to Camperdown route is currently active on the platform. The Inner West and Northern Beaches corridors are growing. And for any route that doesn't have active rides yet, setting a ride alert means you'll be notified the moment a driver posts — without having to check manually.
Beyond the practical, the University of Sydney is where many students build the professional and personal networks that define the decade after graduation. The commute — short, regular, predictable — is an unexpectedly good environment for that. You spend 20 minutes with someone from your suburb, heading to the same campus. By the end of semester, that person is not a stranger. They might be the most useful person you met all year.
Herdy is free to download. Set a ride alert for your route, or search your suburb to Camperdown to see what's already happening near you.

Yes — and it's one of the most natural ways to do it. Twenty minutes in a car with someone who lives near you and goes to the same university is genuinely good time together. USyd attracts students across law, medicine, arts, engineering, and business — your carpool partner might be in a completely different faculty, which often makes for the most interesting conversations. Herdy users have found study partners, housemates, and real friendships through regular carpooling.
Coordinate with your driver in the Herdy chat before the trip. Common drop-off points include the main gates on Parramatta Road, City Road near the Quadrangle, or Cadigal Green near the Wentworth Building. For the Darlington campus, the Wilson Road entrance is usually convenient. Confirm the exact point with your driver in advance based on your faculty.
No — you can join rides as a passenger without a car or licence. If you do drive to USyd, posting your commute on Herdy lets you recover running costs from fellow students going the same direction. Recurring rides — posted once for the whole semester — are particularly popular with USyd drivers who commute on fixed days.
